Brewster and Company

Our story begins in 1810 when James Brewster opened a carriage building business in New Haven, Connecticut. By 1927 there were branch factories in Bridgeport and New York City. By the late 1800s this Company became the nation’s leading coachbuilder. In 1905 Brewster entered the automobile business, importing chassis’s from Delaunay-Belleville of France and Rolls-Royce of England upon which they constructed bodies of their own design. They built American automobiles up to 1925.

The Brewster & Co. Inc., Long Island City, New York then built the Brewster with a ford chassis from 1934 to 1936. At a glance the brewster heart shaped grille, triple bar bumpers and flared fenders may be just a bit flamboyant, but the overall effect is one of understated elegance. There’s no mistaking a Brewster for any other American automobile. The 1935 Brewster’s sold for $3500 in any of four different body styles.

In addition to the 1934-36 Brewster, the company built the Knight from 1916 to 1925. These cars were roadsters, touring cars, coupes, town landaulet, town brougham, runabout and a large limousine.
