Mercury Tail Fins 1960s – Mercury production during the 1960s involved plenty of models, sizes, wheelbases and body types including the ever changing tailfins. The Comet and Monterey spanned the entire 10 years and the Montclair and Park Lane were dropped in favor of the Meteor and Monterey.

Montclairs like the one featured above was equipped with Mercury’s best appointments included extra chrome trim to set them apart from other Mercury products. And yes, they included large tail lights and tail fins.

1961 was a good year to down size the huge lead sleds produced by Mercury in the late 1950s. This 1961 Mercury Metor had toned down tailfins and it sold for about $2500.00. Most were equipped with a 221 cubic inch six cylinder.

With this bright red 1962 Mercury Monterey Custom the tail lights were the tailfins. It sold for $3,488.00 and only 2,772 were produced. This was a major restyling for 1962.

Another major restyling took place at Mercury in 1963. Fins returned and the tail light moved back to under the trunk lid. This 1963 Mercury Monterey convertible had better trim and was more elaborately styled.

New at Mercury was the Mercury Marauder and featured a sloping notch back roof design and tailfins that started on the front fender. Additional features included bucket seats, console and special trim packages.

Exclusive to the Mercury Montclair Marauder convertibles like this one and hardtop sedans was a 383 cubic inch V8 that developed 330 horsepower. The tailfins were restyled in 1965 and so was the grille.

By 1966 Mercury was no longer entangled with the Ford brand and competed closely against top of the line American Motors, Chrysler, Buick and Oldsmobile automobiles. It started in 1965 and was called stright line styling with modest tailfins.

For 1967 Mercury styleing was revised again. This two door hardtop had broad rear roof pillars, a vinyl top, die-cast grille and redesigned tailfins.

All four door hardtop models like this red one were Park Lane Broughams. The Mercury line up for 1968 included the Monterey, Montclair, Marquis and Park Lane. There were no changes to the Mercury tailfins in 1968.

For 1969, the full size cars of both Ford and Mercury were completely redesigned. By then there was not much left of Mercury version of the tailfin.
