Stout Scarab Bug

Scarab

The man behind the Stout Scarab Bug was William Bushnell Stout, a tinkerer and inventer in the 1920s and 1930s. Stout was an incredible engineer and designer way ahead of his time. He invented everything from airplanes to automobiles.

The Stout Scarab is a 1930s and 1940s American minivan and was manufactured by Stout Engineering Laboratories and later by the Stout Motor Car Company of Detroit, MI. The first running prototype of the Stout Scarab Bug was completed in 1932 and the second Stout Scarab was completed in 1935. This awesome American automobile shown below was built in 1936. Note the Scarab bug on the hood and red Scarab logo on bumper, hubcaps and steering wheel.

Stout designed the Stout Scarab Bug without a front mounted engine by placing the Ford V-8 engine in the rear creating a flat floor inside the passenger compartment. The design of the Stout Scarb body was by John Tjaarda and followed the construction of an aluminum aircraft fuselage. In the 1930s the Stout sold for $5,000. Only about nine Stout Scarab Bug were made.

The Stout Scarab was a two door six passenger rear wheel drive sedan. It had a Ford flat head V-8 and a 3 speed manual transmission. The wheel base was 137 inches. Acceleration was 0-60 miles per hour in 15 seconds and had a top speed of 80 miles per hour.

The word Scarab may refer to the Scarab beetle or the dung beetle species worshipped by the ancient Egyptians. Scarabs were popular amulets (used to protect the owner from danger) and impression seals (used to authenticate legal documents) also used in Ancient Egypt.
