Are American brands embracing the EV revolution? They sure are, in a big way. Here’s how these domestic names are adding value to the EV world.
It was a foregone conclusion that American automakers would enter the world of electric vehicles in a big way. Not long ago, GM, Ford, and FCA (now Stellantis) began shuttering sedans and small cars out of their lineups in an effort to free up production space and capital for new EVs. Of course, the Detroit Big Three aren’t the only American names in the electric vehicle world. Let’s take a look at some of the American brands that are leading the EV revolution.
Ford
Ford took an immediate and calculated approach to its EV market. Instead of creating new names and new models, the company focused on the nameplates that were already hugely successful by adding an electric version of the Ford F-150 half-ton pickup truck and an SUV alternative to the Ford Mustang. The Mustang Mach-E had to convince drivers it was worthy of the name, while the F-150 Lightning immediately secured its place in the EV world.
GMC
The first electric vehicle from GMC turned heads and created a world of possibilities for the entire market. The GMC Hummer EV SUV came in as a heavy, capable, and imposing SUV with tons of power and performance. Never before was a 9,000-pound behemoth capable of rocketing to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds, but once this SUV hit the roads, it was possible. Since that time, GMC has also added the Sierra EV, which is an electric version of its popular half-ton truck. GMC is a fully American brand embracing the EV revolution.
Chevrolet
Chevrolet has been a huge player in the EV world for many years. First, the Chevy Bolt beat the Tesla Model 3 to the market, making the Bolt the most affordable EV available. Next, the bow tie brand has searched for ways to add electrification to its lineup with the Silverado EV, Blazer EV, and Equinox EV. Electric power has become a big part of Chevrolet and shows up in the Corvette E-Ray, which is a hybrid supercar from this brand. After only a few years, Chevy is certainly leading the way in the world of electric vehicles.
Cadillac
The luxury arm of GM is leading the way in the EV revolution with new names and new ways of doing things. Cadillac chose to go from a middling luxury brand to a much higher level with some of its new electric vehicles, which include the Lyriq, Optiq, Vistiq, and new Escalade IQ. That’s right, Cadillac created an electric version of its massive, full-size luxury SUV that ensures drivers can have the electric comfort and size desired for any drive.
Rivian
Rivian has been a hit or miss brand in terms of financing, but it’s hard to argue with the capability and build of its two electric vehicles. Despite some early troubles, Rivian appears to be off and running in the EV world, giving us the R1T and R1S, which are a truck and an SUV. These two vehicles take a different approach to electric driving compared to what Tesla has done. These Rivian vehicles are highly capable off-roaders, ready to tackle the wilderness and handle your trail-riding fun.
Tesla
It would be impossible to talk about American brands leading the EV revolution without Tesla. This brand has sold more EVs than any other and, like Rivian, only builds EVs. Tesla has been in the electric vehicle market longer than any other name on this list, starting with the Tesla Model S, which was the first long-range EV that proved using electricity was viable and a good alternative to gasoline. Since that time, Tesla added two SUVs, a truck, and another car to the mix, and the company continues to research ways to develop electric semi-trucks.
Dodge and Ram
Ram is only one brand in the Stellantis family and hasn’t yet brought the electric Ram pickup to the market, but its due for 2026. Dodge, on the other hand, has the Charger Daytona EV, which is a new electric performance car, giving the market an alternative to the gas-powered models. This is a new direction for Stellantis and that should mean more electric vehicles coming under the Dodge, Jeep, and Ram names in the future.
American brands are leading the way into the EV revolution, with some brands focusing exclusively on electric vehicles, while others look to add new models to the mx through electric alternatives to well-known nameplates. Are you ready to drive an American EV?
