Honda Ranks High on American-Made Index

Made in the USA

Drivers who want to support the American industry might be surprised to find how easy it is to do at the Honda dealer. Find out where the popular brand ranks on Cars.com’s American-Made Index.

Today’s car shoppers are discerning buyers who know what they want and how to get it. What they want are affordable vehicles made in the USA. Cars.com makes it easier than ever to find those vehicles by compiling the American-Made Index each year.

This year, the Index shows an interesting trend: Honda managed to snag three of the top six spots on the list. In other words, if you want an American-made car, truck, or minivan, head to your local Honda dealer.

What Is the American-Made Index?

The American-Made Index is an annual report produced by Cars.com. The Index is designed to help drivers find vehicles made primarily in the United States to support local manufacturing.

The Index uses information provided in compliance with the American Automobile Labeling Act, which states that automakers must report the percentage of US parts by value for their passenger cars, plus four other factors, to rank 100 vehicles.

Along with the percentage of US parts, the Index also considers the percentage of Canadian parts, the final assembly location, the country of origin for engines and transmissions, and how many US manufacturing jobs the company provides.

The Top Contenders for 2024

The results are from last year’s American-Made Index, providing some fascinating insight into the state of the US automotive manufacturing industry. A surprise to no one, Tesla takes the number one spot with the Model Y, assembled in Fremont, CA, and Austin, TX.

Surprisingly, the number two position goes to the Honda Passport, assembled in Lincoln, AL. The Volkswagen ID.4, assembled in Chattanooga, TN, comes in third.

What are noticeably absent from the top of the list are vehicles manufactured by the Big Three in Detroit: GM, Ford, and Chrysler don’t even make the top ten. On the other hand, Honda, a Japanese Company, makes a strong showing.

In addition to the 2024 Honda Passport, the Honda Odyssey comes in fifth, and the Honda Ridgeline takes sixth place on the list. Both of these vehicles are assembled in Lincoln, AL, along with the Passport.

Tesla also made a strong showing on the Index, with Model S taking fourth and Model X in ninth place. Additional runners-up include the Toyota Camry in seventh place, the Jeep Gladiator in eighth, and the Lexus TX in tenth.

Buy American at Your Local Honda Dealer

If there’s one takeaway from this year’s Cars.com American-Made Index, it’s that you shouldn’t fall prey to marketing gimmicks. Ford, Chrysler, and GM may be American brands, but that does not mean you’re supporting American industry by purchasing their vehicles.

Drivers who want to do their part to support auto manufacturing workers are better off heading to the local Honda dealer for a Passport, Odyssey, or Ridgeline.
