Will you be able to plug your EV into a Tesla Supercharger? This charging network is no longer only for Tesla vehicles and is becoming the industry standard.
Tesla’s Supercharger network is no longer just for Teslas. With Ford, GM, Honda, Rivian, Hyundai, and nearly every major automaker adopting the North American Charging Standard (NACS), the EV charging landscape is undergoing a massive shift. This article tracks which EV brands now have access to Tesla’s Superchargers when adapters are rolling out, and which future models will ditch CCS ports entirely. From free adapters to built-in NACS ports, here’s everything you need to know about the fast-evolving charging ecosystem.
A universal port matters
You don’t have to pull in at a special fuel station to refill your gas or diesel-powered vehicle because every pump has the same nozzle that fits in the tube leading to your gas tank. The same can’t be said of electric vehicles. EVs have been built with various charging ports including the oddball CHAdeMO and the Combined Charging System (CCS) and the latest to be a universal port which is the North American Charging Standard (NACS).
The Tesla port is the NACS charger, which is quickly becoming the standard. Soon, all EVs will likely have this charging port, and other types of chargers will be a thing of the past. Using this charging port as the standard across North America allows EVs that are not Tesla models to utilize the Tesla Supercharger network. This network has become the gold standard of EV chargers because it’s the most reliable. Of course, that reliability factor was earned when this charging network was only used for Tesla vehicles and none from other brands.
Which automakers have agreed to the NACS port?
Acura
The only EV from Acura is the ZDX, which is an electric midsize luxury SUV that currently comes standard with a CCS-type port. Future models will be equipped with the NACS port using an adapter that plugs into the CCS port and the NACS charger.
Audi
Another luxury automotive brand that will use Tesla Superchargers is Audi. Audi EVs will also have a CCS-type port and the same adapter as Acura, making it easy to plug an Audi into the Tesla charger and use this fast-charging network that has quickly become the industry standard.
BMW
BMW will add the Tesla NACS port starting early this year. This should also extend to Mini and Rolls-Royce models, which are subsidiaries of BMW. Existing models with the CCS-type port will be compatible with the Tesla network via an adapter.
Ford
Ford was the first brand to agree to adopt the plug to use Tesla Superchargers. The official adapter for Ford models has been released, allowing the Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E to be easy to charge at NACS stations and CCS locations.
Genesis
Genesis follows along the same path as the rest of the models mentioned so far. This brand will have a CCS port and an adapter that allows Genesis EVs to plug into the NACS locations provided by Tesla.
GM
General Motors was the second automaker to agree to add the NACS adapters to its EVs. This means electric vehicles from Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and GMC will be able to charge via the Tesla Supercharger network without any issue. These EVs will also have CCS ports.
Honda
If you think this list is getting long, that’s kind of how it works when a universal system is created for any product. Honda will also have the NACS plug starting this year and introduce an adapter for its CCS-equipped EVs.
Hyundai/Kia
Hyundai and Kia will also have the port required to utilize the NACS charging stations around the country. These two brands have been forceful in the EV market, building many models and expanding their electric offerings.
Jaguar
Jaguar is working toward an EV-heavy lineup and will ensure upcoming models are compatible with the NACS starting in 2025. Current Jaguar EVs will have the adapters required to utilize the Tesla Supercharger network.
Additional Brands
Currently, several other brands have followed along the same path you see in the names already listed. Other brands that will have NACS ports are:
- Lexus
- Lucid
- Mazda
- Mercedes-Benz
- Nissan
- Polestar/Volvo
- Porsche
- Rivian
- Toyota
- Volkswagen
In Talks
Stellantis has confirmed the company is considering adopting the Tesla charge port, but a deal hasn’t been inked yet and that puts the Stellantis EVs wearing Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Maserati, and Ram brand names a little behind the other brands listed.
Is it comforting to know that if you purchase an electric vehicle, nearly all brand will be able to use the Tesla Supercharger network?
