The 2027 Chevy Bolt Is Back, and It’s the Cheapest New EV You Can Buy

The 2027 Chevy Bolt Is Back, and It’s the Cheapest New EV You Can Buy

Chevrolet pulled off something pretty rare in the auto world. After killing the Bolt at the end of 2023, GM listened to fans, reworked the formula, and brought it right back for the 2027 model year. The result? A sub-$30,000 EV packed with upgraded tech, a new battery, and faster charging. It’s now the lowest-priced electric vehicle on sale in the United States, and the story behind how Chevrolet made the 2027 Bolt the most affordable EV in America is a lesson in smart engineering.

  • The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt starts at $28,995 MSRP, making it the most affordable electric vehicle currently available in America.
  • The 2027 Bolt uses the same motor and power electronics found in the Chevrolet Equinox EV, and this parts sharing cut costs while also boosting performance.
  • General Motors squeezed more range from the Bolt’s 65-kilowatt-hour lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack, upping the EPA-estimated figure to 262 miles on a full charge.

Sharing Parts Across GM’s Lineup Kept Costs Down

So how do you build an EV for under $30,000 without cutting the stuff people actually care about? GM’s EV portfolio now spans affordable crossovers to luxury flagships, and that breadth creates a large pool of shared parts. According to chief engineer Jeremy Short, using existing parts across models actually reduced costs in many areas where upgrades were made.

Short has said that “everything electrical is new” on the 2027 Bolt versus its predecessor, from switches and wires to control modules and high-voltage parts. For both the electrical setup and the powertrain, many parts were taken directly from the larger Chevrolet Equinox EV.

Inside, the Bolt features an 11-inch diagonal driver display and an 11.3-inch diagonal touchscreen, both larger than the outgoing model’s screens. Chevrolet sourced these displays from GM’s mid-size truck platform, and sharing parts across high-volume vehicles lowered the per-unit cost.

When the company realized it had an 18-month production gap at its factory in Fairfax, Kansas, executives signed off on the little EV’s revival. The timing and available factory space made the whole project possible without building something from scratch.

A New Battery That Charges Faster and Costs Less

The battery is one of the biggest changes under the skin. The new 65 kilowatt-hour battery is GM’s first to use lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry. Power from it flows through a new battery management system to an electric motor borrowed from the front-wheel-drive Chevy Equinox.

Why does LFP matter? The chemistry eliminates minerals like cobalt and nickel, slashing the cost. LFP batteries also don’t suffer from degradation when charged repeatedly to 100%. Previous Bolt owners were encouraged to limit their daily charging to 80%, reserving the last bit for road trips. That limitation is gone now.

The 2027 Bolt can take advantage of DC public fast charging up to 150 kW, charging more than 2.5x faster than the previous Bolt. With DC public fast charging, drivers can now go from 10% to 80% battery charge in 26 minutes. That’s a massive jump from the old Bolt’s 50 kW cap, which could take over an hour to add 200 miles of range.

Between the new motor and the improved power electronics, Chevy was able to find an additional 15 miles of range. Even with the same size battery, the Bolt can travel farther, a total of 262 miles.

What You Get for $28,995

The 210-horsepower front-wheel-drive setup provides lively acceleration, while three trims (LT, LT Comfort, and RS) give buyers plenty of room to choose. That power gets the Bolt from 0 to 60 in 6.8 seconds.

The 2027 Bolt is Chevrolet’s first vehicle to offer a native NACS charging port, which means you can plug directly into Tesla Superchargers without an adapter. The 2027 Bolt is also vehicle-to-home (V2H) bidirectionally capable, meaning that when paired with a GM Energy Home System, it could provide power to a properly equipped home during an outage.

Every Chevy Bolt comes with over 20 standard safety and driver assistance features. Buyers can also add available Super Cruise driver assistance technology and HD Surround Vision for an even better driving experience.

For the first time, the 2027 Chevy Bolt is available in Chevy’s sporty RS trim, with unique grille badging, high-gloss black wheels, and roof rails. Bolt RS is available in an exclusive color combination of Atomic Yellow exterior with red interior accent stitching.

Should You Act Fast on the 2027 Bolt?

There’s a catch. The Bolt will be a limited run model. After all the re-engineering and new supply contracts, GM will reportedly end production of the Bolt somewhere around 16 months from now. That means if the Bolt fits your life, waiting too long could mean missing out entirely.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, approximately 80% of U.S. EV drivers charge at home. With the average American driving roughly 42 miles per day, the Bolt’s 262-mile range covers a full week of commuting on a single charge for most drivers.

For anyone who’s been waiting for an electric car that doesn’t break the budget, the 2027 Bolt makes a strong case. It pairs smart engineering with real-world practicality, and at $28,995, there’s nothing else like it on the market right now.
