The Ford Production Halt 2025 Impacts Production of F-150 Lightning and Five Other Models After Supplier Fire

The Ford Production Halt 2025 could have lasting impacts on the automaker that faces challenges sourcing aluminum after a supplier fire.

A massive fire at a Novelis aluminum plant in upstate New York just forced Ford to pause production on some of its biggest moneymakers. The automaker stopped making F-150 Lightnings, Expeditions, Lincoln Navigators, and the outgoing Escape and Corsair after the September blaze knocked out a facility that supplies 40% of the entire U.S. auto industry’s aluminum sheeting.

Novelis is down for a while

The plant won’t be back online until early 2026, and analysts say this could cost Ford up to $1 billion. Ford’s scrambling to find alternative suppliers, but here’s the problem: the F-150 uses aluminum body panels for weight savings, making this shutdown particularly painful for America’s bestselling vehicle. The Novelis aluminum plant fire impacts other automakers as well, but Ford uses this aluminum for body panels on its trucks, which means production is halted for many models. Currently, the Ford F-150 Lightning production is on pause, and the Ford Expedition production has stopped, all caused by the aluminum shortage to automakers, but mostly Ford.

What does the Ford Production Halt 2025 mean for the automaker?

When you bottom line the loss that Ford will feel, that means massive losses of profits and revenue, which has led to temporary plant layoffs. Some experts already predict that Ford will need to pause production on more vehicles than have already been impacted by the loss of Novelis until 2026. The Kentucky Truck Plant Shutdown

The Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville is where the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator are built. Ford recently announced the production lines at Kentucky Truck Plant will be shutdown for at least a couple of weeks because of the Novelis fire. While this means other vehicles made at this plant can still be built as normal, the shutdown of these lines means some workers are on the sideline for the time being.

The good news about this situation is that at least two-thirds of the plant is still running at normal operations because some of the trucks built at this plant are not impacted by the Novelis fire. The Super Duty pickup doesn’t use aluminum body panels, which means it has not been impacted by the aluminum shortage.

Ford and Novelis are scrambling

The Ford Production Halt 2025 has many people at Novelis and Ford working to solve this problem. Novelis has been working around the clock to restore the damaged area of the plant, but it won’t likely be back online until the first quarter of next year. In the meantime, Novelis has been working with its global network to fill orders, but with little to no luck yet. Ford hasn’t found an alternative supplier of aluminum, which means shortages have impacted production and halted several vehicles that use this aluminum for body panels.

The current model of the Ford F-150 uses aluminum body panels, which have proven to be a good fit for the truck, making it lighter while still being strong enough to get the job done. Many UAW leaders are concerned about the production of this truck, which is built in its gas version at the Dearborn Truck plant, which could mean trouble for workers.

Workers at several Ford plants could face temporary layoffs as more production lines are shut down. Outsourcing aluminum is problematic

Novelis will be shut down for at least three months, and finding foreign aluminum suppliers isn’t a good option, thanks to the 50% tariffs imposed by the current president.
