The Electric Hummer Puts On the Old H2’s Yellow Jacket

The Electric Hummer Puts On the Old H2’s Yellow Jacket

Some colors just stick with you. For anyone who wandered the 2002 Los Angeles auto show and spotted that big yellow Hummer H2, the new Icon 25 edition is a wink across 25 years. GMC is dressing its electric Hummer in the same eye-catching hue that made the original impossible to miss.

  • The Icon 25 celebrates 25 years since the H2 first appeared in 2002
  • It comes on both the SUV and pickup, in 2X or 3X trims, with output up to 1000 hp
  • Only 250 are expected, and every 2027 Hummer EV now uses a NACS charging port

A Nod to the H2 That Started It All

The Hummer H2 rolled onto the scene at the 2002 Los Angeles auto show, and it made an impression right away. Big, boxy, and unapologetic about taking up space, it became a fixture of the early 2000s. A quarter century later, GMC is marking the occasion with the Hummer EV Icon 25, a limited edition built around one very specific memory: that yellow paint.

The new version wears a shade called Icon, inspired by the original H2’s exterior color. It looks a good deal different from its ancestor, and it swaps the old V-8 for a fully electric setup that can make up to 1000 horsepower. But park one on the street and the same personality comes through. Those wide, lane-hogging dimensions and that bright coat still turn heads the way they did back then.

What Makes the Icon 25 Special

This is a limited-production run, so there are a few rules. You pick either the SUV or the pickup, then choose the 2X or 3X trim level. From there, the Icon paint is yours, paired with a black-painted bumper shield up front. Inside, GMC goes with a Jet Black interior theme that plays nicely against all that yellow on the outside.

The details go deeper than paint. Each Icon 25 gets a serialized badge on the dashboard, which is part of what tips off the limited numbers. The infotainment system also includes drive-mode animations that reference the heritage H2, so the throwback shows up on the screen too, not just the sheet metal. A photo of that serialized badge points to a planned run of just 250 examples, though GMC hasn’t put a firm number on it yet.

Charging, Power, and Everyday Use

For 2027, the whole Hummer EV lineup adopts Tesla’s NACS charging port. That means access to the Supercharger network without an adapter dance, which is a real convenience for a big EV that drinks plenty of electrons. Owners who want more from their truck can lean on bidirectional charging, letting the Hummer act as a backup power source and feed a home during an outage. That trick requires a GM Energy PowerShift Charger and the Energy V2H Enablement kit, so it’s a setup thing rather than something that works out of the box.

GMC is also freshening the palette for the model year. Along with Icon, buyers can choose Azurite Blue, Dark Ember, Dark Ridge, and Deep Void Matte. If you’re the type who shops by color first, there’s more to sort through than before. Of course, plenty of buyers approach GMC’s showroom with a smaller footprint in mind, weighing something like the GMC Terrain vs. Acadia before they ever glance at a hulking electric truck. The Hummer sits at the far, flashy end of that same family tree.

When Can You Get One

Production is set to begin later this year at GM’s Factory Zero Assembly Center, which spans Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan. Pricing is the one big blank so far. GMC says the full numbers will land sometime before the trucks reach dealerships, so anyone eyeing an Icon 25 will want to keep an ear out. With only around 250 slated to be built, this is the kind of edition that tends to move quickly once details firm up.

The appeal here is simple. It takes a well-known modern EV and ties it back to a moment plenty of people remember. If the original yellow H2 lives in your memory as a symbol of early-2000s excess, the Icon 25 is a fresh, electric way to relive it. Just with a lot more horsepower and a much quieter ride.
